Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke at the 18th annual International AIDS Conference today in Vienna, Austria, saying that the United States is the largest financial supporter of global AIDS programs.

These International AIDS Conference started in 1985 in Atlanta, Georgia. The AIDS 2010 program will present new scientific knowledge and provide many opportunities for structured dialogue on the major issues facing the global response to HIV today.

“We are focused on reducing the impact on families and communities when the virus claims women of reproductive age, passes from mother to child, or is spread through gender-based violence,” she said. “And we believe access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care should be a universal, shared responsibility, because health is a human right.”

The conference attracted more than 25,000 attendees from around the world. The U.S. is scheduled to host the conference in Washington, DC in 2012.
