StudioBasel, an international creative arts firm, is organizing and sponsoring the 2012 International Ramadan Photography Competition: Capture the Spirit of Ramadan, for a second year.

The IRPC was created by Studio Basel to "showcase the skills and imagination of talented photographers from around the world as they share their techniques and personal anecdotes about cultural and religious traditions during Ramadan," says StudioBasel’s Senior Marketing Director Lina Ali.

Photographers are invited to share their work during a 30-day gallery exhibition highlighting a side of the faith that many are unaware of, in hopes of educating and enlightening those who know little of Islam.

"Last year's competition brought in some unexpected and surprising photos from every corner of the world and everyone learned so much," says Basel Almisshal, founder of StudioBasel.

The 2011 competition drew a total of 25,000 photographers and fans, including 600 photos from over 40 countries. The participants were of all faiths, races and age groups.

StudioBasel focuses its efforts on social responsibility, and is a completely volunteer based effort, receiving no personal profit from the event.

Almisshal wants to contribute to the development of contemporary art and design in the Arab and Muslim world by reviving and incorporating Arabic and Islamic design influences in modern artwork.

If you would like to join this year's competition, please send your highest and best quality photos taken during Ramadan 2012 along with a caption and EXIF data to IRPC.2012@gmail.com.

ILLUME is proud to be a media partner for this year's contest. Check back on our site during the entire month of Ramadan for more photoessays. Below are some photos from the 2011 competition.
