Documentary Filmmaker Eric Allen Bell, who in 2010 depicted Islamic Center of Murfreesboro opponents as Southern Christian bigots, has switched sides, now claiming that “the mosque is part of a plot to destroy American,” reports USA today.

“I want to communicate that the biggest threat to human rights is Islam,” he said in a recent interview, leaving supporters feeling betrayed.

Many are questioning if he was paid by anti-Muslim groups to change his views. “Only a hired gun would switch sides like this," declared Jace Short of Middle Tennesseans for Religious Freedom.

As late as November 2011, Bell was criticizing mosque opponents on a blogpost “Holy War Y’All” on dailykos.com. He wrote, "Of course, Muslim Americans making up less than one percent of the total population in this country, the idea that one percent will arm themselves and take over is nothing short of paranoid and psychotic nonsense, but it sells.”

After learning more about overseas terrorist attacks and reading criticisms of Islam by supporters and owners of Jihadwatch, he changed his opinions, claiming to suspect the mosque leaders of terrorist ties.

After trying to incorporate these new views into his film however, he lost many financial backers.

He now claims that those who opposed the mosque had simply used faulty methods. “It doesn’t help when you show up in red, white and blue and spout Bible verses.” He then suggested that the opponents target Shariah as the main problem.
