Javed Mohammed didn’t appreciate the portrayal of Muslims in mainstream cinema. So he decided to do something about it.
Mohammed, a longtime Milpitas resident, created the website “MyFavoriteReview.com” to encourage the consumption of Islam-focused entertainment of a more socially conscious nature. It includes selections of books and movies that Mohammed and his friends have recommended, and is open to reviews from the public.
“A byproduct of the work at MyFavoritieReview has been that we have found many good titles that most people will not have heard about,” said Mohammed. He says an additional benefit is that he has now expanded the site from aiming at a solely Muslim audience to reviewing more generally socially relevant films or books.
Mohammed says he and his small team of reviewers usually rely on referrals from friends as well as online searches of potential titles, both old and recent, from independent and international material. He believes his site has something more mainstream consumer review sites don’t.
“The challenge with Amazon, Netflix, Rotten Tomatoes, etc. is that they are so large,” says Mohammed. “Unless you know what to look for, you can spend hours searching, and even then the hit rate is very low.”
He says these sites still cater to bestsellers and blockbusters, and may skip out on lesser-known titles.
