The Colors of Fear: Red and Lavender Scares

On October 20, 1947, the notorious Red Scare kicked into high gear in Washington, as a Congressional committee began investigating Communist influence in one of the world's richest and most glamorous communities: Hollywood.

On October 20, 1947, the notorious Red Scare kicked into high gear in Washington, as a Congressional committee began investigating Communist influence in one of the world's richest and most glamorous communities: Hollywood.

Around the same time, there was also another colored scare, dubbed The Lavender Scare. It references a moment when a substantial amount of gay men were fired from government employment, as well as persecuting a number more into silence.

The perpetrators: Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn.
