The Doggfather wraps up an incredible six months of entertainment in Abu Dhabi
The inaugural Yas Island Show Weekends in Abu Dhabi wrapped up last Friday with a spectacular finale featuring the American superstar rapper, Snoop Dogg.
The self-proclaimed “Doggfather” received a roaring welcome from a crowd of 10,000 people at the Yas Arena, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, making the event another success for FLASH Entertainment.
Performing his latest hits, including Prince William’s bachelor party anthem “Wet” off his latest studio album, “Doggumentary,” Snoop Dogg entertained the crowd for almost two hours. Fans were left wanting more as he belted out some of his more memorable songs over the last two decades with tunes such as “Snoop Doggy Dog,” “I Wanna Rock,” “Nate Dogg,” “Hypnotize” and “Drop it.”
In appreciation to Snoop Dogg, renowned Saudi designer and fan, Hatem Al Akeel, presented a “Kandoura” or “dishdasha” to the hip-hop icon as a gift, especially designed for him. Snoop Dogg performed the first few songs wearing the “Kandoura.”
Adam England from the UK said: “I can’t believe FLASH actually brought the Doggfather himself to Abu Dhabi. It was an amazing concert. The organization was superb and we had a blast.”
“FLASH never fails to surprise us by bringing the best international artists from around the globe. I’ve attended every single show at the Yas Arena and I can tell you that each one of them was a unique experience for my friends and I. So thank you FLASH!” said Samira Ahmed from Lebanon.
His appearance in Abu Dhabi is proof that hip-hop is alive and kicking in the Middle East. Some of the region’s rising young hip-hop artists took to the stage performing some of their own material —an opportunity all the local artists relished.
Also on stage were the Emirati brothers who make up Desert Heat, Farid Karam Nassar, better known in the music industry as Fredwreck, Khalifa and Abdullah, DJ Lobito (Zulu Nation Middle East), Ridim Crew (Zulu Nation Middle East), Robin, DJ Rone Jaxx and The Recipe who were given a rousing welcome when they performed some of their own material, proving that hip-hop is on the rise in the region.
The only female performer was Queen of Arab hip-hop, Malikah, who has paved the way for a new generation of female hip-hop artists in the region to express their views without being stigmatized. Lynne Fattouh, aka Malikah, and MC Lix, has made and enormous breakthrough in changing the way Arab female rappers are viewed today. This talented young rapper has also worked with Snoop Dogg.
The hip-hop genre was the final installment for the 2010-2011 Yas Island Show Weekend season, but before fans get too upset, FLASH spokesperson Shatha Al Romaithi is promising the concert and entertainment series will be back.
“The Yas Island Show Weekends has created so many wonderful memories for over 150,000 people over the last six months,” she said. “We have been overwhelmed by the feedback from the fans straight after the events as well as the artists who performed at the Yas Arena and the FLASH Forum.”
She added: “This has been extremely successful because we were able to provide people with a vast majority of events and headline concerts from hip-hop, R&B, as well as rock and roll, dance and pop. FLASH Entertainment has more of the same planned for the second season of the concert weekends. We would like to thank our sponsors and especially the general public who got behind this show weekends to make them a success.”
The Yas Island Show Weekends program was launched back in November 2010 not only for headline concerts but also for themed free parties, events and activities, designed for all ages, backgrounds and tastes.
Since its launch, over 150,000 people from across the region visited Yas Island, making it the hottest party destinations in the Middle East. As a result, hotels on the island were at full capacity.
The Yas Island Show Weekends have catered to everyone’s taste, crossing all music genres from the Jonas Brothers, Nelly Furtado, Guns N’ Roses to Creamfields Abu Dhabi and NBA Jam Fest Abu Dhabi.
Also, the first quarter of the Yas Island Show Weekends 2011 kicked off with the soulful music of the great Stevie Wonder serenading thousands of fans with his great hits, while Rock and Roll legend and three-time hall of fame inductee Eric Clapton rocked the Yas Arena with his eclectic selection of songs. American rock group Thirty Seconds to Mars played to a new generation music lovers while clubbers danced the night away to the sound of the internationally renowned DJ Tiesto.
This incredible selection of artists was all part of the first quarter of the show weekends. However, it didn’t end there; the hip-shaking Colombian superstar, Shakira, kicked off the second quarter sharing the stage with the Egyptian superstar, Amr Diab.
Snoop Dogg's performance last Friday capped off an amazing six months of entertainment, leaving thousands of fans with an array of memorable moments.
